This small handmade vintage tribal textile pillow or cushion utilizes a vintage recycled hand embroidered square which most likely came from the bodice of a Pashtun dress from Afghanistan. It is divided into four sections with star shaped hand embroidery work in each section. It is trimmed with blue seed beads, backed with brown velvet, and stuffed with cotton.
Measurements: 9″ inches x 9″ inches
The predominant colors of the embroidery work are burgundy red with a touch of purple on black silk.
Janet Harvey’s “Traditional Textiles of Central Asia” as well as Roland Paiva and Bernard Dupaigne’s “Afghan Embroidery”are excellent sources for additional information on this rich and diversified tradition.
This is a gem for anyone who appreciates tribal textiles and wants to add a touch of color to any chair or couch.
